And I get to use a company vehicle! It’s actually a state owned Ram 1500 so that’s cool. Yellow state owned plates and everything. I’m the only person on my team comfortable driving something so big (I learned to drive in a Suburban).

I love driving company vehicles. Last summer I worked for my town in the public works department, and I was assigned a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD with a dump bed as my truck. It was the largest thing I’ve ever driven.

This used to be my work truck. Thing was massive

Hahahaha, you plebs!
I used to drive one of these at my work.

My job last summer and possibly this summer had me driving a Gator.

I’ve driven one of these around a shop. It was terrifying.

You started a job on a Friday?

...what shop?

The Diesel Equipment Shop at the mine I work at.

Heh. One place I used to work at immediately hooked me up with a Chevy truck that had a manual transmission. Apparently they’d been looking for someone that knew how to drive it.

Our work truck (2012 2500 HD with Duramax), it’s actually pretty darn nice to drive as long as you have enough room to turn. Oh the power, so much torques.

Yup. I get to move in to their housing today too.

And housing??? Be honest... you’re actually in a North Korean labor camp, aren’t you?

University Housing is my employer. So kinda.

When you say around you mean around the outside of the building, yes?

Yeah, I wasn’t about to back it out for sure. I just drove around the shop. It’s a huge shop.

Neat. I have regular use of a (Dodge) Ram 1500 as a company truck as well, except mine is a ‘93 with 274,000 miles and various things wrong with it, so I don’t take massive pleasure in the opportunities.

Why does NC have two different colors for state owned plates? Buses, police cars, etc., have orange ones while those Chevrolet Uplanders and Ford Taurus’ with no badging on them, other than, “state owned,” have yellow plates.
Are there certain qualifications on what gets a yellow or orange plate?

Yellow is state owned orange is local municipality.
So local cops, school buses, county vehicles, and the fire department have the orange plates.
State agencies, like the motor pool in Raleigh for use by state employees, the state universities including their police departments, the Department of Public Safety, Department of Corrections, and the State Capitol Police use the yellow plates.
The State Highway patrol uses standard First in Flight plates with the prefix SHP and their rank number. These plates are also stamped with the year and replaced annually.

The orange ones don’t actually say state owned. They just say NC permanent.

Very insightful, thanks. I know the Wake County Sheriff still uses the black Z06 on I40 near RDU as a pursuit vehicle, and that has SHP plates. Probably because incognito.

That’s curious.

...or I could be mistaken and it could be an SHP car just operating in Wake County. Still curious.

If it’s a Corvette it’s probably Wake. Last time I saw it it had a red numbered first in flight plate.

I saw it at the auto show in February, at the police pavilion at the NC Auto Expo in Raleigh, as it is there every year.
Speaking of the red numbered plates, my TrailBlazer has them. Only red plates I’ve seen in a long while.

All cars registered 07-09 had them. I’m still looking for one for my collection.

I plan on getting a novelty plate (MEMEMAN is the incumbent nominee), and I’ll let you have the red plate if you want it.

Cool. I’d appreciate it. But if you want a special plate I’d stay away from a personalized one. $30 a year is expensive. Get the Watermellon for $10 a year.

MEME MAN, tho. The Watermelon plate is pretty fantastic. The prevent litter plate is pretty great, too. Oh, and we can’t forget the Ford Racing plate on a Chevrolet. Perhaps the shag dancing plate?
